When I
started photography I always wondered what other photographers were
using as equipment. So here is what I used for my photos.
Cameras
Nikon D4
This one I bought on 22 of february 2014. Just like the Nikon D2X this
is also the king of all current cameras. This camera has a fullframe
sensor with 16.2 megapixels. This means that the sensor area per pixel
is larger than with the Nikon D2X. It is really unbelievable how much
more light sensitive the Nikon D4 is. This is truly a great acquisition
which even with higher ISO values barely shows any noise. This means
that the shutter time can become even shorter.
Nikon D2X
This one I bought on 15 of Juli 2005. It is really the king of all
current cameras. It is not cheap and you can not do anything with it
without some good lenses which are also not cheap. But then again, you
really have the best. For artistic gymnastics this is also needed
because you like to make photos in the worst conditions. Gymnastics is
almost always indoor and the gymnasts move very fast. This camera even
has a special feature, namely it can take photos using all of its 12.4
megapixels or only use half of them and process them more quickly so
that I can take upto 8 photos a second. However, I always use the full
12.4 megapixels.
Konica Minolta Dimage A1
This is not in use anymore.
This one I
bought on 25th of April 2004. I was ready for a better camera with more
resolution and more features. It has 5 megapixels and all kind of
controls for shutter time and aperture. However in darker environments
it does not perform very well. So for acro gymnastics it was a great
camera, because there is often little movement during great shots, but
for artistic gymnastics it is not very usefull.
Sony Cybershot DSC S50
This is not in use anymore.
I bought it on 25th of Oktober 2000 and this was my first photo camera.
It has 2 megapixels and is very easy to use. It even performs quite
well in darker environments.
Lenses
Nikkor AF-S Zoom 28-70mm f/2.8D IF-ED (2.5x)
This lens is really great for acro gymnastics. The object to photograph
is often higher since gymnasts climb on top of eachother. It is also
very light sensitive so perfect for indoor.
Nikkor AF-S VR Zoom 70-200mm f/2.8G IF-ED (2.9x)
This lens is really great for artistic gymnastics. The object to
photograph is often further away. It is also
very light sensitive so perfect for indoor.
Flash
Nikon Autofocus Speedlight SB-800
This flash is powerful and can be used very well indoor in
a gymnasium. However be aware that during competitions a flash is often
not allowed to
be used. It could disturb the performing gymnast. Therefore I only use
it during gym galas.
Tripod
Manfrotto tripod
Although the Nikon D2X / D4
can take pictures without the need of a tripod, it is still very handy
to keep all that weight in the air for a whole day. So I do
not have heavy demands on the tripod itself besides being a
weightlifter.
Storage
HP Pavilion Sleekbook 15 Serie (500 GB)
After the Photobox had died I bought this one. Other photoboxes were
not available anymore or were more expensive than a complete laptop. Besides the
fact that the laptop has even bigger storage, it is also very handy for selecting
and editing the photos on the spot.
Conceptronic Photobox (250 GB)
This is not in use anymore.
After the Sitecom Media Drive had died I bought this one. The bigger
storage capacity is a great advantage. Sadly the power for this device
also does not last a full day when used extensively.
Sitecom Media Drive (30 GB)
This is not in use anymore.
Besides my collection of compact flash cards (2 x 2GB + 2 x 1GB + 2 x
256MB) I also
have a media drive. This is really helpful when shooting very many
pictures. But be aware that you need an extra power source when using
extensively. The internal batteries will not last long enough for a
whole day.
Notes
Smartphone: Samsung Galaxy S3 i9300
I bought this smartphone on 26th of november 2012. This is a good replacement for
the PDA for making notes.
PDA: HP6915
This is not in use anymore.
I bought the PDA on 26th of August 2006. I do directly not use it for
shooting photos. However it is a very useful tool for making notes to
help me recognise the gymnasts on the photos.
